This past weekend my girlfriend rented me a 2012 911 Carrera S (MT) for my 26th birthday. Holy hell was it a great twenty four hours. Potato pics for now, GoPro videos and impressions to come later.
TLDR. Unfounded Porsche appreciation is now founded, I have seen the light .
Note - only parked in this space for quick photo op. I swear!

I need to know NOW
How did you like the transmission?
I've only driven the 6 speed MT in my 997 and love it
I've read that the 7 speed is kind of rubbery

Very cool. Welcome to the light!

The transmission was great, a nice halfway between the Asian (FRS, S2000) and German (Z4M/228i) styles i have tested. Direct with feedback, but a little more forgiving. I'm not sure rubbery would be my description.
This car should be a 6MT. That being said, the 7MT didn't really trip me up. I used 7th gear on the highway a few times and it was a bit odd downshifting 7-6-5-4.
The 991 is insanely capable, that being said I think a 997 would be quite enough and a lot lighter on my wallet. Even though the 911 is big, you only find yourself noticing it in parking lots.

One of these days I have to fall off my wallet and rent a supercar. Just for a day.

My only advice would be don't skimp on mileage. Once you've bought into the upfront cost, its not time to pinch pennies.
Also, make sure to know good roads ahead of time. I planned it all out to avoid traffic and unwanted attention.

From here, I think my best bet is around Chappaqua, where the Clintons live. Lots of twisty roads running through the woods. There are also lots of nice roads out there where Ralph Lauren keeps his car collection, also in Westchester.

Awesome, thanks for the info!
I want to add a 991 7MT one day then. Not to replace the 997 but to supplement it. Would be cool to have both MTs. Of course I will wait until 5-7 years until I can get a 2014 991 GTS for a good price ;)

unwanted attention? In a 911? Hahahaha.... Or maybe I live a bubble, but I see 997+ on a daily basis, and no one bats an eye, even when someone's driving a GTx (rs/no)
Dallas Plano Austin btw

People might bat an eye when you're bombing the canyons at 7400rpm in 3rd gear. Gearing extends a long way, you do the math ;) It's not the general public I worry about.

Yeah, choice is confirmed. I'll be looking for a 997.2 Carrera S or GTS MT, only the Boxster Spyder lust could dethrone that choice.

OMG we love the same cars
I wish my C2 was either a GTS or a Boxster Spyder

haha I guess if you're ragging on it

Fact of the matter is you own one! I need to step up my game, soon enough...

Don't worry you'll make it happen!
Actually if I could go back in time I would NOT buy the Porsche
Not because I don't love the 997.1 cars, I DO
But because it has lost so much value and Ferraris that were cheaper than it have gained so much value
I wish I had bought the Testarossa instead. Who cares how much it costs to maintain! At least the asset price keeps rising.
